Wedding: Julie & Minh @ Los Coyotes Country Club

May 2010 has been one of the busiest months since I became a full time wedding photographer. Julie and Minh’s wedding is the only back-to-back wedding I’m doing this year. I think I went on a eat & sleep only routine for the next 3 days to be able to recover afterwards, but the work was definitely worth it. =) This is yet another intercultural wedding this year, and it is always an interesting experience and an eye opener to photograph.

This is one of my favorites: Julie talking to the flower girl and ring bearer boy right moments after the walked out of the church after the ceremony. This is one memorable shot… You wouldn’t believe how difficult it was to actually gather the entire bridal party (we only later found that we’re still missing 2 persons after the shot and Julie & Minh wasn’t even aware of it during all this)

These cute elephants are actually the place card holders they used for their wedding. Congratulations again Julie and Minh!

Wedding: Eva & Andy’s Wedding @ Hotel Laguna, Laguna Beach, CA

I was both excited and nervous when Eva & Andy asked me to cover their wedding because Andy has been a buddy of mine who got me into photography, and he’s also into photography himself. Also, their wedding has got to be one of the most unique weddings I have shot to date – both of them being Chinese, they elected to have an Hindu wedding ceremony at Hotel Laguna at Laguna Beach. I’m no stranger to Hindu weddings, but this sure isn’t an average wedding you’d come across every day. =)

The wedding venue Hotel Laguna is a historical building dated back to 1888 and is a cute and charming place. Their unique and colorful decorations really made the entire wedding very special. They went as far as having a hindu priest and Eva wore a traditional sari while Andy wore a sherwani during their ceremony. At their dinner reception, Eva slipped into her wedding gown and they wowed the guests again with some great Bollywood dancing performance and their beautiful Croquembouche!

Half way through 2010

Half way through 2010 publications photography

I can’t believe it’s May already and wedding season has officially begun! I’m going through the busiest month of the year and there’s a back-to-back Saturday and Sunday wedding later this month. There has been quite a bit of changes thou and we’re definitely moving forward in the past few months to provide a quicker turnaround time, and also expanding our services. I can’t wait to share with you guys what’s in store. =)

  • I still remember not too long ago when I wasn’t sure what route I wanted to take in my photography career, and I worked on some small automotive shots just for fun. A couple months ago I got a flickr mail from Digital Photo Magazine in the UK, and to my surprise they wanted to use one of my pictures… I’m super stoked and flattered and I still can’t believe that happened, especially knowing myself for not ever entering my work into any forms of contest, ever! I hope someday my wedding work will get there and I really look forward to that. =) You’ll find this picture in the Digital Photo Magazine issue 129 (May 2010) page 8 and 9 full spread!
  • Blog update! As you probably already have noticed there’s been several updates to this blog, and there are even more upcoming changes to make the site more user friendly and aesthetically pleasing. We’ll be implementing slideshows and other cool new features next!
  • Wedding Gift Registry!! I’ve been thinking about this for a while ’cause often times I come across couples who could use a little help with their wedding budget and doesn’t need that fourth toaster oven, the Wedding Gift Registry we now offer should solve that problem nicely. All you need to do is to spread the words before your wedding to your guests, and we’ll take care of the rest for you!
  • The Apple iPad – This new toy is definitely making my life easier. It allows me to bring much more than just a few albums and my portfolio book at meetings. Now I can even bring some of my sample album layouts, and pretty much all the pictures I wanted in high resolution, along with a nice calendar, my emails, and even replaces my notepad. I’m loving it!
  • We’re cooking up a new client booklet and package list for our new couples to improve communication and to provide them a much better idea what to expect along every stage of their wedding from us.
  • We work hard in order to provide the best experience possible for every couple, and we’re very proud of all our collection of 5-star reviews as shown on projectwedding.com and some even on Yelp! The positive feedback count continues to grow, and Shirley and I are totally humbled and I can’t thank you all enough!
  • Videography – a few of you have inquired, but unfortunately we’re still working out the details at the moment so that would’t be available as early as we hoped for. I’ll be sure let you guys know once we have anything set in stone.
  • Last but not least, PHOTO BOOTH! It’s been on my mind for the past few months and I haven’t been able to set it in motion. But I finally picked up the key equipments and we’re working towards the finishing touches at the moment. In the next couple of months we should be ready to roll out that new service, and it’s going to be awesome! We wouldn’t be bringing in a passport photo booth to your wedding, instead, we’ll bring in a real photographer with professional lighting setup and all the gears to print you 4×6 lab quality photos on the fly. Best of all, we’re working on making it consistent with our entire experience – FUN! Stay tuned for more info!

LACMA engagement photo - Urban Light

I just knew that we’d have a great time on our e-session when I first met up with Tiffany and Mike because I sensed a great chemistry between us. Since they booked me quite some time ago, we’ve exchanged ideas over the past months before we came together to do this fun e-session. We even wrapped up the night with a yummy Korean BBQ spot in LA, and of course I had to send them my recommendations on ramen haha! We never seem to run out of silly things to talk about the whole time – Mike’s new Mini Cooper, traveling, food, food, and more food. e Thanks Tiff! Thanks Mike! I’ll never forget us shivering together in your Mini waiting for LACMA to turn on those darn lamps, and let’s do ramen together next time!

Wedding: Jennifer & Matt @ Black Gold Golf Club, Yorba Linda

I never even knew there’s a golf club at Yorba Linda until Jennifer and Matt told me they’re having their ceremony and reception held at the Black Gold Golf Club at Yorba Linda. I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful landscape there and the wonderful staff who were very helpful, and on top of all that it was a beautiful sunny day in SoCal despite the very unpredictable weather lately. Oh and of course the very yummy food there! =)

We started off the day at Matt’s residence photographing Jennifer the bride and her bridesmaids, and then Shirley and I headed over to the golf club to have a photo session with Matt and his groomsmen. Julie the coordinator even fetched us some golf clubs to use as props and we sure had fun especially when Matt got to practice his swings on his wedding day!

And after the wedding, Julie even took a limo cart and took us out to the golf course for pictures!!

Huge thanks to the following awesome vendors who helped made the wedding so awesome!
  • Jack Hou from The Music Man Productions for lighting and Emcee (by the way the lights really made my job easy and photographing the dance was a blast because of it!)
  • DJ Jack Phan from Raw Entertainment
  • Julie Spencer the super friendly, super cool event coordinator who went out of her way to take excellent care of everybody, and all the friendly staff at Black Gold Golf Club!

Make the most of your engagement session – What to wear?

“what should I wear form my engagement photo session?”

That question come up often when I schedule my upcoming engagement photography sessions. To find the answer rather than just saying “just dress casually”, I looked to Julie, who I recently did an engagement session with along with her fiance Minh since she’s done a fantastic job selecting her outfit. I went ahead and asked if she would share her thoughts on how she chose her outfits for her engagement session, and she kindly agreed! She generously sent me an email with details on why she chose her outfits and a lot of great tips to share! (and even where she bought them!) This should be very helpful for the future bride-to-bes in picking their clothings.

Without further ado, hare the tips from the amazingly photogenic Julie on what she picked to wear and why:

Make the most of your engagement session What to wear? wedding reserouces

Outfit 1: Julie: Navy & white graphic print shift dress (Ann Taylor Loft) and navy cardigan (JCrew); silver ballet slippers (Zappos). I purposefully wanted a graphic print dress because I thought it would really pop in pictures. When perusing magazine and websites, the pictures that stand out always have one element that really shines through. Some women like to have bright shoes (ie. a great pair of red heels) or bold accessories (i.e. a statement necklace). I think the key is to have at least one thing that really draws the viewer’s attention. So don’t be afraid to add some color or play with accessories. Women, especially, have so many options with jewlery, belts, hair pieces (headbands, feather pins), and shoes. But even guys could add a little something something, like funky argyle socks, or if you want to go fancy, nice cufflinks, or maybe a faded, rugged baseball cap, or a great pair of sneakers.
me: The dress looks perfect on Julie and is simply adorable. The seemingly repeating pattern really make her pop and draws the viewer’s attention without being too cluttered. It even works great in sepia/b&w tone as well! Good pick, Julie!Make the most of your engagement session What to wear? wedding reserouces

Make the most of your engagement session What to wear? wedding reserouces

Outfit 2: White button-down cotten sleeveless top (Gap), yellow cardigan (JCrew), and slate gray silk dupoini skirt (Ann Taylor). I picked the skirt because I love the sheen and feel of silk and just tailored the rest of the outfit around the skirt. It’s helpful to have a ‘look’ in mind. This outfit was meant to be my more dressed-up option hence the reason for the heels and silk just has a great texture. Plus, since I love color, I liked the idea of pairing yellow with the gray. I was originally thinking a magenta or pink, but the point was just to add color.
me: This simply is an awesome combination and overall I love the looks of it – sleek, smart, dressy enough to go to work and pretty enough to walk into a party. This looks distinctively different from the dress she picked earlier which gives us a good variety in the pictures overall. Yellow probably wouldn’t have been good if we were heading to the beach, but look how works so well with her grey skirt and how good it looks even among brick colors. Best of all, this shows another side of Julie. Also notice how Minh has quite a different look simply by changing a shirt. =)

Make the most of your engagement session What to wear? wedding reserouces

Outfit 3: White sleeveless top (Gap), dark blue jeans (Gap), and silver flip flops. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with the classics. A crisp white shirt and jeans is just easy and casual, but still stylish (at least in my humble opinion). Plus, it really helps to wear pants/jeans for certain poses. Best advice: be true to your own sense of style. You want the pictures to be you, just the best representation of you possible. And I think it really helps to love what you’re wearing because confidence is always beautiful.
me: The most amazing thing about this outfit is that Julie simply took off her cardigan and slipped into jeans and put on her flip flops – took her like 2 minutes in the car to change to a whole new look! Again, this looks distinctively different from the previous, but she still maintains true to be herself but only showing a different facade of her personality!

Tell us what you think! and be sure to share your tips here with other future brides!

Thanks again Julie! and of course, a few more of their engagement pictures to share!

Engagement: Jeannie & Jerry @ Griffith Observatory

I remember when I met Jeannie and Jerry the first time they told me about their passion towards photography. It is especially fun when working with couples who love to take pictures themselves. What I didn’t expect is Jeannie who went all out on her homework doing tons of research on different ideas that made the day super productive and fun!

We started off the day at Pasadena getting the two warmed up. They were a little shy at the beginning, but it didn’t take them long to get warmed up and started sharing their ideas. Jeannie also prepared a ton of props to use which really added to this e-session – scrabble, books, balloons, kite you name it. We then headed over to the Griffith Park in LA hoping to find a swing, but unfortunately they’re all occupied. Not to fear, we then proceeded to the Griffith Observatory towards the evening and caught some beautiful sunset light there.

Thanks guys! Looking forward to your big day later this year!Engagement: Jeannie & Jerry @ Griffith Observatory engagement photography
