Hello!

I'm a professional wedding photographer based in Los Angeles, California.  I shoot in an unobtrusive photojournalistic style with an emphasis on natural and genuine emotions.  I love taking pictures and I treasure every opportunity to preserve precious memories.

This is where you'll find my latest work and and see what I'm up to.  Follow my footsteps in turning my life long hobby into a career I love. Feel free to leave a comment or just to say hi!  Thanks for visiting, and check back often!

I ♥ my job! =)

I love my job.

I’m thankful every time somebody asks me if I enjoy what I’m doing, as I realize appreciate your own job is a rarity these days.

Yesterday I got together 2 boxes of 4×6″, and 9 boxes of albums and drove around town the whole day delivering them. What would have been a boring delivery day getting stuck in traffic actually became one of the most meaningful days of work, having the chance to see the couples whom I had the honor the photograph at their wedding once again and catching up with them. It’s an amazing feeling and it almost feels like seeing some old friends again the whole day. And I was thinking this must be how Santa feels when he delivers his presents to the children, knowing how they would smile from the bottom of their hearts as they unbox their presents. That also reminds me how fortunate I am to somehow found my way to do what I do, delivering memories. Those pictures will continue to remind those couples of their wedding day, and they will help them relive the day of happiness for years to come just like how I treasure my own wedding pictures.

Thanks, to all my old, new, and future clients. It is because of your support and the satisfaction of helping you make your wedding day memorable that continues to drive me forward.

Alright, back to work… Happy Monday!

Forbeyon Wedding Albums

I have to admit that I simply <3 Forbeyon!

They never fail to wow me every time I get their books in the mail with their quality and craftsmanship.  Since I picked up an Alienbees B800 flash with a 5 feet softbox, I owe it to myself to take a few pictures of them.

Pictured below:

First Wedding of 2010: Abba & Paul

Sorry I’ve been away from blogging for a while.  Things have been a little crazy lately and I took a trip on short notice to Hong Kong (again) for family matters.  It’s already March and it’s that time of the year where everybody is trying to have their engagement pictures taken, and so I switched gears to pay full attention to shooting, processing, album design, etc etc.

So here’s Abba and Paul, who signed me on the spot on our meeting (thanks for having faith in me!) since early last year as our first couple in 2010!   Their ceremony is held at the St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church in Chino Hills, which is stunningly gorgeous, and their reception held at the Eagle Glen Golf Club at Corona.

Huge thanks to Melinda Chu from Weddings by Melinda, and Mark Mejia from the Eagle Glen Golf Club going out of their ways to make sure everything is done right and everyone is taken care of.  It’s a blast to work with the two of them!

Congratulations again!  (heading right back to work…  must catch up on blogging and processing)

03/09/2010 - 7:25 pm Kim H. - Amazing shots of the guys! It looks like they used their engagement pictures for their table numbers? Great job Herman! Can't wait for our turn :)

Elopement Wedding: Krystle & Jake at Malibu, CA

I rarely, and I mean, rarely go onto craigslist… but for whatever reason I somehow stumbled across Krystle’s post on craigslist.com a while ago looking for a photographer in Southern California and I sent her a message.  Later I found out that she was swarmed with some 50+ replies and had to remove her post shortly after.  I’m humbled to be the one she picked…  =)

We started off that morning meeting Krystle and Jake at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica.  It’s a beautiful historical hotel and it’s  Art Deco architecture is simply amazing.  We then drove off to Point Dume at Malibu for their heart-warming ceremony at a beautiful secluded beach.  It’s just one of those magical weddings that you feel the warmth from the inside and I’m just honored to have the opportunity to photograph.  The results?  You be the judge. =)

I really look forward to your wedding reception in Tucson later this year!  Congratulations again!

Engagement: Lillian & Binh @ San Francisco

When Lillian and Binh asked me if I would travel to San Francisco for their engagement photoshoot, I was really excited and I gave them a big YES!

Lillian and Binh both live and work in San Diego, but they met in Pharmacy School in SF while  I spent my high school and college years in the Bay Area in Cupertino and San Jose.  I’ve always loved the weather and vibe there up north, and I just can’t say no when I had the opportunity to visit San Francisco and use it as a backdrop.

We went to the Golden Gate Park, went back to UCSF and the area where they used to live, stopped by at some of the historic Victorian Houses, then drove along Embarcadero and went over to the beautiful piers, and wrapped up the gate near the Golden Gate Bridge.  It’s been a lovely day and I spent a wonderful time with the two of them.  I guess I wouldn’t mind working on my birthday again this year, and see you guys in San Diego in May! =)

01/18/2010 - 12:41 am Alvina - I'm not usually into leg shots but I really like the sneakers and high heels one :] And of course, SF e-sessions are EXTRA awesome.

and the winner of the FREE engagement contest is…

I’ve been thinking about how to pick a winner for the contest for the past week and I couldn’t figure out a good and fair way.  This morning when I sat down in front of my iMac and thought, let me google “random number generator”… and then I found this random.org that has a nice and simple tool that randomly generates an integer (it’s been quite some time since I used that word… integer).  As mentioned previously, I’ll pick a winner out of all the comments on any posts on the blog.  So I had it generate a random number out of the total number of comments on my new blog, and it gave me this:

So the winner is… comment number 63, an anonymous poster who made a comment on my Flickr Explore blog? Well, that one doesn’t count ’cause it’s imported from my old Blogger Blog. :-)  I’m sure I’ll have a angry mob going after me if I declare nobody a winner.

So let’s give this another try, and then this is what I got:

And so I looked up the comments page again, and let’s see who it picked…

winner

and the winner is… Alvina!

Stay tuned for the followup on the contest and I’ll be sure to show you guys the results.  =)  Be sure to stop by often and as promised, I’ll be running another contest soon for a FREE wedding photography.  I’ll be posting about the details soon.

From Maui

Just a few shots taken during my trip in Maui including some of the OMG encounter with the whales, and the amazing sushi in the mom and pop’s hole in a wall Japanese restaurant Koiso.  On a side note, I’m still trying to find the right pictures to put on my wall that really needs some love.

Oh and just 2 more days until we declare the winner for the Christmas free engagement contest.  Keep your fingers crossed, and good luck!

01/13/2010 - 11:27 pm Alvina - So you normally take really awesome pictures but that cock... oh my. The colors are magnificant! And them short ribs look delicious. I'm pretty sure if you can evoke hunger by your photos, you've done a good job. :) *fingers crossed!*

Happy New Year!

Sunrise at MauiWow, I can’t believe it’s already 2010.   The previous year definitely has been one of the most memorable years of my life thus far with so many ups and downs.  I had to bid farewell to several of my loved ones including my grandma who just passed away at the end of 2009 and my beloved cat CC; but on the bright side, 2009 is the year which I turned my career around.  With all the support by my wife, good friends and families, and of course all those who I photographed and who signed up for 2010 so far.  It definitely has been an emotional roller coaster for me and I’m really looking forward to the new year.

My wife and I wrapped up the year by taking a few days off to Maui with a couple friends of ours.  I was able to get a little tanned, but my farmer’s tan (photographer’s tan) has definitely gotten worse.  We had some great food, built sand castles, watched some humpback whales which has been amazing by the way thanks to the Pacific Whale Foundation!  Here are some pictures we’ve taken during the trip.

Anyway, Happy New Year and Aloha from Hawaii! =)

01/10/2010 - 3:19 pm Ching - What a beautiful picture! It's not everyday that one can look at the sun from above the clouds.

01/09/2010 - 6:06 pm Alvina - Where are these "pictureS" you speak of?! Only that lovely one above? And those little tab things under the post where you can "share" the post with a number of mediums is pretty cool... how they pop up when you scroll over them. haha. Happy new year!

Happy Holidays!

DSC_7350

This is the only wedding that does not land on a weekend in 2009 and the last wedding to photograph for me this year, but it is a special wedding that I’m sure will be memorable for Karmen and Isaac.

I’ll be out of the office for a week for a short vacation (well deserved I hope!), and you’ll find me on the beach of Maui~

Merry Christmas to you all!

Toshi Sushi

My wife Shirley sometimes do some pretty random stuff. Like last week she signed us up as audience of a Gordon Ramsay Cook Along Live TV show. It’s quite an interesting experience, but gosh it kinda sucks to stand there and smell them cook all that food and not having anything to eat! =)

We ended up going to a sushi place called Toshi Sushi at downtown LA which one of my brides recommended on her facebook page. It’s quite a pleasant surprise really. We had a great dinner and a great time there chatting with the chef/owner and the waitress Chika san. =) Here are the pictures I took with the phone to share with you guys!

12/22/2009 - 11:10 pm Alvina - Haha I note one of your blurring techniques on one of the pictures, but you manage to make usually grainy and craptastic phone pics look good! Props. :]

12/22/2009 - 10:38 pm Laura K - wow you're even a good photographer with your phone! :) that looks yummy though!
